Basic Dye - Polyacrylic Multi Purpose Textile Dye | Red

Jacquard Basic Dye: dyes where others give up
Fake fur in neon pink. An acrylic wig in deep blue. A straw hat, a reed basket, a wooden sword in red.
Where most textile dyes give up, Jacquard Basic Dye is only just getting started.
It is probably the best dye for dyeing polyacrylic. And it dyes much more: wood, straw, raffia, paper, leather, wool and silk.
13 vivid shades so bright that you almost need sunglasses.
For prop makers and costume designers, Basic Dye is therefore the all-purpose tool for difficult cases.
At a glance
• Basic dye as powder, 14 g
• 13 very bright shades, mixable with each other
• Dyes polyacrylic, fake fur, acrylic wigs, wood, straw, paper, leather, wool and silk
• Dyes at 30 to 85 °C with vinegar or citric acid
• Also as an alcohol stain for leather and wood
• Only in a pot, not in the washing machine
What can I dye with Basic Dye?
• Polyacrylic: fake fur, acrylic yarn, acrylic blankets and inexpensive knitwear. Here Basic Dye is in its element.
• Wigs and synthetic hair made of acrylic
• Wood, reed, straw, raffia and paper: for props, hats, baskets and decorations
• Leather: also as a self-mixed alcohol stain (see instructions)
• Wool, silk and hemp: with very intense colours. On these natural fibres, however, the colour is not particularly light- and washfast without fixing. Therefore: always fix natural fibres after dyeing, for example with DyproFix or iDye Fixative.
Polyacrylic is not polyester
This is constantly confused: polyacrylic is neither polyester nor polyamide nor polyurethane, even though all of them have “poly” in the name. Basic Dye dyes polyacrylic through and through. For polyester and nylon, use iDye Poly. Rit DyeMore also dyes acrylic, polyester and acetate. For brilliant, washfast colours on wool and silk we recommend Jacquard Acid Dye.
How hot do I have to dye?
Basic Dye dyes at any temperature between 30 and 85 °C. The warmer the dye bath and the longer the dyeing time, the more intense the shade.
• Polyacrylic and hard-to-dye materials you dye in a pot at approx. 85 °C.
• Wool and silk you dye carefully at approx. 80 °C, heated slowly and cooled slowly.
How much dye do I need?
• Textiles: 1 to 3% of the weight of the dry material. A 200 g T-shirt therefore needs about 5 g of dye.
• Wood and solid materials: 1 to 3%, for black and brown 5%. For 100 g of wood that is 5 g of dye.
• Alcohol stain for leather and wood: 7.5 g of dye in 240 ml of pure alcohol.
Only in a pot, never in the washing machine
Basic Dye dyes not only your material but also almost everything else: plastic parts, enamel, the worktop and the floor. So dye only in a pot, bucket or bowl and cover your work area well. In the washing machine, all plastic parts would be dyed as well.
What else do I need?
• For natural fibres, a fixative is essential: DyproFix or iDye Fixative
• White household vinegar or citric acid
• Synthrapol for prewashing, as a drop in the dye bath and for rinsing out
• Rubber gloves and, when weighing out the powder, an FFP2 dust mask

Jacquard Basic Dye: Dyeing instructions
Basic Dye is easy to use. Please remember: the dye colours almost everything, including your work area. Cover everything well and wear rubber gloves. When weighing out the powder, also wear an FFP2 dust mask.
1. Dyeing textiles (polyacrylic, fake fur, wigs, wool, silk)
1. Weigh the dry material.
2. Take 1 to 3% dye of the material weight. A 200 g T-shirt needs about 5 g of dye.
3. Prewash the material, ideally with Synthrapol, to remove finishes (sizing).
4. Fill a pot, bucket or tub with enough hot or warm water that the material is covered and can float freely.
5. Add 30 ml of white vinegar per litre of water (or 2 g of citric acid per litre) and a drop of Synthrapol.
6. Stir in the dye powder until it has completely dissolved.
7. Put the wet material in and let it work, stirring, until the desired depth of colour is reached.
• Polyacrylic you dye in a pot at approx. 85 °C for intense colours.
• Wool and silk are heated slowly to approx. 80 °C, moved little and left to cool in the dye bath.
8. Rinse the material until the water runs clear. For wool, use water at the same temperature as the cooled dye bath.
9. Finally, wash it with Synthrapol, to remove loose dye residue.
10. Wool, silk and other natural fibres must now absolutely be fixed, for example with DyproFix or iDye Fixative. Otherwise the colour fades quickly when washed.
11. You can keep the dye bath for later dyeings.
2. Dyeing wood, reed, straw, raffia and paper
1. Weigh the object.
2. Take 1 to 3% dye of the weight, for black and brown 5%. For 100 g of wood that is 5 g of dye.
3. Fill a bucket or tub with enough hot water to cover the object.
4. Add 30 ml of white vinegar per litre of water (or 2 g of citric acid per litre).
5. Stir in the dye powder until it has completely dissolved.
6. Put the object in and let it work, stirring, for 10 to 20 minutes until the desired depth of colour is reached.
7. Rinse the object under cold running water and let it dry.
8. You can keep the dye bath for later dyeings.
3. Mixing an alcohol stain for leather and wood
1. Dissolve 7.5 g of dye powder in 240 ml of pure alcohol (denatured alcohol, 100% alcohol).
2. Apply the stain with a brush or sponge.
3. Apply several coats until the desired shade is reached. Let each coat dry.
This mixture is easy to apply and harms neither leather nor wood.
Good luck!
Jacquard Basic Dye: Frequently asked questions
Can I dye polyester with Basic Dye?
No. Basic Dye dyes polyacrylic, not polyester. For polyester and nylon, use iDye Poly.
Why shouldn't I dye in the washing machine?
Basic Dye also dyes plastics. In the washing machine, seals, the porthole and other plastic parts would be dyed as well.
How wash- and lightfast is Basic Dye?
On polyacrylic the colour holds well. On wool, silk and other natural fibres it has little light- and washfastness without fixing. Therefore always fix natural fibres after dyeing, for example with DyproFix or iDye Fixative. Also wash these items by hand, separately and cool, and protect them from strong sun. For lasting colours on wool and silk we recommend Jacquard Acid Dye.
Can I reuse the dye bath?
Yes. Keep it tightly closed and labelled. Depending on how much dye is left in it, the next dyeings will be somewhat lighter.
My hands and the sink are coloured. What can I do?
Basic Dye dyes very well, unfortunately also skin and surfaces. So always wear gloves and cover your work area. Wipe splashes off smooth surfaces immediately if possible.
Can I dye fake fur without it matting?
Yes. Move the fur only gently in the dye bath, rinse it carefully and let it dry lying flat. Then brush it out with a soft brush in the direction of the pile.
