What amount of fabric can I dye with a pack of Rit All-Purpose Dye?
To find out how much dye you need, weigh the item to be dyed on a food scale or estimate the weight.
As a general guideline, a pack of Rit All-Purpose Textile Dye will dye approximately 500 grams of dry fabric (that's about 3 metres of lightweight fabric or 2 large adult T-shirts).
To get a lighter colour, use less dye.
If you want to achieve a very strong or dark colour, double the amount of dye.
What do I have to keep in mind when dyeing?
Natural fibres can be dyed with Rit All-Purpose Dye at 60 degrees in a cooking pot or washing machine. If you want to dye polyamide (nylon) or viscose you have to increase the temperature to 90 degrees.
Be sure to read the dye instructions before dyeing! This will help you avoid gross mistakes and poor dyeing results.
To dye textile fibres you need high temperatures.
Forget about the manufacturer's instructions on the label in the garment! Cotton and linen tolerate a boil wash without any problems - just like polyester and polyamide (nylon).
Don't be afraid - dyeing in a cooking pot is really easy.
High spin speeds and tumble drying are more problematic. That's what makes garments shrink - not a hot wash!
Dyeing in the washing machine?
Dyeing in the washing machine is the most convenient dyeing method of all. All you have to do is sit back, relax and let your machine do all the work.
But if you have never before used dye in a washing machine we can understand why you are nervous!
And who wants a purple washing machine?
Well, we might ;-). However, we can promise you that Rit will not colour permanently any metal parts of your machine.
Rit has been used in washing machines for decades, ever since the invention of the electric washing machine in the 1950s.
In the early 1960s, Rit coined the phrase "Push Button Color!", to promote the connection between Rit and washing machines.
First, dissolve the dye in hot water. If that is too complicated for you, use Rit All-Purpose liquid dye in the bottle instead (also available here in the PATIN-A Shop).
Very important: Clean all plastic parts of your washing machine immediately after dyeing. You can also very easily remove the detergent compartment of your machine and clean it with household cleaner.
Dye salt or vinegar?
• Salt is needed for dyeing cotton, linen, ramie or rayon
• Vinegar is needed for dyeing nylon, silk or wool
Fixing after dyeing?
After dyeing and before rinsing, all natural fibres and fabric blends should be fixed. For this purpose, there is the easy to use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative.
Polyamide resp. nylon does not have to be fixed.
