Shibori: Dye great results with the Rit Shibori Indigo Set

Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique in which fabrics are folded, twisted or bundled, tied together and then dyed with indigo.
Rit has put together an easy-to-use Shibori Indigo Set that contains everything you need to create a variety of unique shibori patterns.
The kit includes our all-purpose indigo dye, rubber bands, tying thread, plastic squares, gloves and instructions.
It also contains ColorStay Dye Fixative, Rit's secret weapon against bleeding and fading.
This kit can also be used with any other colour from our Rit All-Purpose range.

Indigo dyeing - super easy!

Instead of preparing a complex dye liquor with indigo and numerous chemicals, you can start dyeing immediately with the Shibori Indigo Set.
Let your creativity run wild and work on your fabric by folding, tying, crumpling or twisting it - anything is possible.
Then simply place it in the dye bath and wait a while. After dyeing, fix with the included ColorStay Dye Fixative.
The result will blow you away!

What do I need for dyeing?

The pack contains blue dye, fixative and gloves.
All you need is some table salt or PATIN-A dyeing salt and possibly a wooden spoon for stirring.
If you want to dye silk with it, simply use white vinegar instead of the salt.

How much fabric can I dye with the Shibori Indigo Set?

To determine the amount of dye required, weigh the item to be dyed on a food scale or estimate the weight.
As a rule of thumb, one Shibori Indigo Set will dye approx. 1000 grams of dry fabric (that is approx. 6 metres of lightweight fabric, 1-2 pairs of jeans or 4 large T-shirts for adults).

At how many degrees is the dyeing process carried out?

Natural fibres can be dyed with Rit All-Purpose Dye at 60 degrees in a saucepan or in the washing machine.
If you want to dye polyamide (nylon) or viscose, you need to increase the temperature to 90 degrees.

Dyeing shibori in the washing machine

Shibori is a dyeing technique that is created by artfully tying fabrics together.
The bound pieces of fabric must therefore be dyed very carefully. The rubber bands or cords would definitely come loose in the washing machine.
Therefore, only pot or tub dyeing is possible!

Dyeing salt or vinegar?

Depending on what you want to dye, you will also need 250g of salt or 250ml of white vinegar.
• Salt is required for dyeing cotton, linen, ramie or rayon
• Vinegar for dyeing nylon, silk or wool

Fixing after dyeing?

After dyeing and before washing, all natural fibres and blends should be fixed.
Use the bottle of Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative from the set for this purpose.
Polyamide and nylon do not need to be fixed.

Dyeing instructions

Before you start dyeing, you should define and prepare the subsequent shibori patterns by folding, tying or sewing the fabric. This will make bright patterns visible after dyeing with the blue colour.

Preparation:

1. Pre-wash the fabric. This helps to remove any finishes that may impair colour absorption.

2. As a general guide, 1/2 bottle of dye (120ml) mixed with 10 litres of water will dye 500g of dry fabric. Adjust the dosage accordingly.

3. Fill a plastic container or stainless steel sink with hot water. Ideally, the water temperature should be 60°C or higher. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the cooker, in a kettle or microwave and add it to the dye bath. Use the hottest water that is safe for the fabric.

4. To enhance colour: (1) add 250g salt when dyeing fabrics contain cotton, rayon, ramie or linen; (2) add 250ml vinegar when dyeing fabrics contain nylon, silk or wool. Add 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent or Synthrapol to promote even colouring. 5. Wear rubber gloves and add the well-shaken colourant.

Dyeing:

6. Place your bound fabric into the dye bath

7. For patterns with strong blue/white contrasts, leave the bound fabric in the dye bath for 3 to 5 minutes. For a stronger blue and fewer white areas, the bound fabric should remain in the dye bath for 10 to 20 minutes.

8. When the desired colour intensity has been reached, remove the bound fabric from the dye bath. Do not loosen the elastics or ribbons yet.

Fixation:

9. Immediately after dyeing, the colour must be fixed with ColorStay Dye Fixative. This product helps to improve colour intensity and reduce colour bleeding. As with the dye ratio, mix ½ bottle (120ml) of ColorStay Dye Fixative with approx. 10 litres of water per 500g of fabric. Adjust the dosage accordingly.

10. Fill a plastic container or stainless steel sink with warm water (60°C). Wear rubber gloves and pour the well shaken ColorStay Dye Fixative into the container or sink. Stir well.

11. Add the still bound fabric to the bath.

12. Stir slowly and continuously for 20 minutes.

13. Remove the bound fabric from the liquid.

14. Rinse with cold water.

Opening the lacing:

15. Remove any tying (i.e. string, rubber bands, blocks of wood, etc.).

16. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, rinse and leave to dry.

Good luck with your Shibori dyeing!
