What you don't want in everyday life for your clothing is precisely what is often required on the set for many films: aged and destroyed costumes.
The costumes have to be destroyed partially through slight tears, frayed seams and signs of wear and tear - but how can this be achieved?
With this flat wire brush light and delicate fabrics can very easily be distressed (carefully) and the brush comes in handy on many sets.
The name of the brush comes from its original purpose: the cleaning of wooden or metal files, from which stuck traces of material are often hard to remove after use.
It also comes in handy for roughening soles of ballet shoes and dancing slippers.
In costume departments though this brush is used as a patinating brush for various distressing and ageing effects.
The steel wires are hardened and so they can 'scratch' thin fabrics beautifully thanks to their chamfered shape.
To what degree fabrics will be destroyed depends on the pressure exerted and the type of fabric. To be sure to obtain the desired result, make a 'scratching' test on an inconspicuous area.
