Preparing for re-dyeing with Fiebing's Deglazer
Before starting to re-dye your leather piece, make sure to clean it thoroughly and remove all finishings, greases and other residues in order to obtain an even and beautiful dye result.
Fiebing's Deglazer strips smooth leather of existing finish, greases and waxes while leaving the leather soft and flexible.
Removing top finishes for a stain free result
Before dyeing leather you have to remove all previous finishes (Top Finish) in order to open the pores and allow the new dye to penetrate the leather deeply. The result will be a stain free and clean dye.
Fiebing's Deglazer can be applied with a cloth or a sponge.
Please use Deglazer in a ventilated room and wear rubber gloves or nitrile gloves.
For removing surface residues that occur with tanning for ex., we recommend Fiebing's Dye Prep No. 5
Can I use acetone instead of Deglazer?
It is a popular misconception to believe that you can achieve identical results with acetone - that is definitely not the case.
Acetone makes the leather brittle and destroys its structure. It becomes dry and cracked and your beautiful shoe or precious embossing will be damaged.
For costume distressing, acetone is used to make leather shoes, belts and hand bags brittle and look old.
For removing of a top finish, please use exclusively Deglazer.
