How do I fix with Rit ColorStay?

Choose your fixing method

For general projects use the sink or bucket method.

For maximum effectiveness use the method in the cooking pot on the stove.

If you want to work with small items or apply ColorStay Dye Fixative to a small/partially dyed (e.g. dipped) area, use the spray method.

If you are dyeing large pieces or looking for the easiest method to apply ColorStay Dye Fixative then use the washing machine method.

Sink or bucket method

1. For every 1/2 kilogram of dry fabric (e.g. two large adult T-shirts), use 120 ml of ColorStay Dye Fixative with 11.5 l of water.

2. Fill a plastic container or stainless steel sink with hot tap water. Pour well-shaken ColorStay Dye Fixative into the container or sink. Mix well.

3. Wearing rubber gloves, pour ColorStay Dye Fixative into the bath.

4. Place fabric into the bath.

a) If you are working with fabrics that have been tie-dyed or shibori dyed, place the tied fabric into the bath. If you put the already opened fabric in the bath, the dye may rub off into the white areas.

b) If you are working with an ombré or dip-dyed fabric, put only the dyed part of the garment in the fixing bath. If you immerse the whole garment, the dye could transfer to other areas.

5. Stir slowly and continuously for 20 minutes. When you have dyed the garment, it is very likely that any unbound dye still on the fabric will end up in the bath. This is perfectly normal and will not affect the result.

6. Rinse in cold water.

7. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.

Stove top method

1. Wear rubber gloves to protect hands from soiling and to insulate them when working with hot water.

2. For every 1/2 kilogram of dry fabric (i.e. two large adult T-shirts), use 120 ml of ColorStay Dye Fixative with 11.5 l of water.

3. Fill a stainless steel pot with water. Cover the pot and heat the water on the stove to just below boiling point (93°C or higher).

4. When the water begins to simmer, shake the bottle and pour ColorStay Dye Fixative into the pot. Mix well.

5. Put the fabric into the bath.

a) If you are working with fabrics that have been tie-dyed or shibori dyed, put the tied fabric into the bath. If you put the already opened fabric in the bath, the dye may rub off into the white areas.

b) If you are working with an ombré or dip-dyed fabric, put only the dyed part of the garment in the fixing bath. If you immerse the entire garment, the dye could transfer to other areas.

6. Keep the temperature on low for the duration of the application.

7. Stir slowly and continuously for 20 minutes. When you have dyed the clothes, it is very likely that any unbound dye that is still on the fabric will end up in the bath. This is perfectly normal and will not affect the result.

8. Rinse the garment in warm water and then let it cool gradually until the rinse water runs clear.

9. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.

Spray method:

1. Pour the solution into a spray bottle.

2. Hang or lay the dyed item flat on a work surface protected with a plastic cover.

3. Spray the item generously with ColorStay Dye Fixative . Then leave to fix for 20 minutes.

4. Optional: The application of heat helps to relax the fibres so that the ColorStay Dye Fixative can effectively penetrate the fibres. You can heat the garment with a hair dryer or place it in the sun. Also, the microwave method can be used to apply heat.

5. Rinse in cold water.

6. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.

Washing machine method:

1.  Please note: We do not recommend this method for particularly large items or multiple items.

2. Place the garment(s) in the washing machine.

3. Set the water temperature to the highest possible setting and a wash cycle of at least 20 minutes or longer.

4. Start the wash cycle.

5. Use 4 ounces of ColorStay Dye Fixative for every 1/2 kilogram of dry fabric.

6. Pour ColorStay Dye Fixative into the detergent compartment.

7. Carefully tip in about 1000 ml of hot water to clean the detergent compartment.

8. After the wash cycle is complete, wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.

9. Clean the machine by repeating the wash cycle with hot water and detergent.
