Sodium Alginate - Dye or Paint Thickener

Sodium Alginate thickens liquid dyes or paints
Sodium Alginate is a natural, non-toxic and very useful thickener for textile painting or printing. It is made from seaweed (brown algae or kelp).
With Sodium Alginate you can thicken liquid paints or dyes for stamping, screen printing, stencilling or tie dyeing.
By adding Sodium Alginate to dyes for tie dye, you can prevent the dye from bleeding and you get very sharp lines.
Paints thickened with Sodium Alginate do not leave marks as is often the case with the usual paste-like textile paints.
The thickener is washed out after fixing and only the colour remains in the fibre.
How do I combine Sodium Alginate with paint ?
Sprinkle the Sodium Alginate slowly in distilled water or in liquid paint or dye, while stirring constantly (e.g. with a mixer or whisk).
Let the alginate sit for an hour or two so that it thickens further before use. For storage, keep it in the fridge.
For thicker consistencies, use 1 - 4 teaspoons per liter, depending on how firm you want the mixture to be.
Do not apply too thickly, thinner is better.
For batik dyes (tie dye), we recommend 1/4 to 1 teaspoon per 250ml of liquid dye to slow down or stop bleeding of colours. Experiment with the amount of Sodium Alginate, as every fabric and every dye behaves differently during application.
