Rit FreeFlow Monochrome Set: Black, White, Silver and Gold

Sometimes you don't need a rainbow.
Sometimes a crisp black line is enough. White lettering on dark fabric. Or a touch of gold that shines under the stage lights.
That is exactly what the Rit FreeFlow Monochrome Set is for.
Four markers in four colours, each with two tips.
White on black is the ultimate test for any fabric pen. Many stay pale and greyish.
FreeFlow covers so well that white really shines, even on dark fabric.

The 4 colours in the Monochrome Set

Black and white create strong contrasts. Silver and gold add shiny metallic accents. Use them for lettering, outlines, coats of arms, medals, braids and decorations on costumes.
The four colours go with all other FreeFlow colours. This makes the Monochrome Set the perfect addition to the colourful sets.

Brand new from Rit

Rit only launched the FreeFlow markers in 2026. According to the manufacturer, they are the first dual-tip paint markers with free-flowing ink. Rit developed them for fabric, but they paint on almost anything you can get your hands on.

Two tips, one pen

Every marker has two ends.
The fine bullet tip is for lines, lettering, outlines and small details.
The soft brush tip paints broad strokes and fills areas. Press a little harder for a wider stroke, press lightly for a thinner one.
It feels almost like painting with a real brush. Just without the washing up afterwards.

What makes FreeFlow special?

Classic fabric pens have a cotton wick inside. It soaks up the ink and passes it to the tip. That works well for a while. But sooner or later the wick dries out, and the pen only scratches pale lines across the fabric.
FreeFlow works without this cotton wick. The ink flows freely to the tip, hence the name. The result is a smooth, even and opaque application with more colour.
To keep it that way, store the markers horizontally and close them tightly after each use.

Which surfaces do the markers work on?

Fabric is where FreeFlow markers feel most at home. But that is just the beginning.
• Textiles: cotton, linen, denim, canvas, viscose (rayon), nylon and silk
• Shoes: trainers made of canvas, leather or faux leather
• Accessories: bags, caps, backpacks, wallets and belts
• Crafts and decoration: paper and card, ideal for notebooks, greeting cards and photo albums, plus wood
• Hard surfaces: glass, ceramics, metal, stone and plastic, for example vases, mugs, glasses or even windows
You don't need a primer. The surface just needs to be clean, dry and free of grease.

Even on dark fabrics?

Yes, and this is where FreeFlow markers really show what they can do. The ink is packed with pigments (the tiny colour particles) and covers like paint.
It shines on a white T-shirt just as well as on a black denim jacket. Fabrics that have already been dyed can be painted on without any problems.

Layering or blending?

Both work. Once a colour is dry, simply paint another one on top. Nothing smudges, nothing runs. This lets you build up shadows, patterns and lettering in several layers.
For soft transitions, use the brush tip while the first colour is still wet.

Will it survive the washing machine?

The ink dries quickly and is water-resistant. According to Rit, it stays colourfast on fabric for 20 washes and more. You don't need to iron it in; the colour holds all by itself. To keep your design looking great for a long time, here are three tips:
• Let the colour dry for at least 24 hours before the first wash.
• Turn painted items inside out before washing.
• Choose a gentle cycle and avoid the tumble dryer if possible.

Ideas for theatre, film and at home

In the costume department, the markers are a handy tool for quick changes. A monogram on a shirt collar, painted stripes on a uniform, a coat of arms on a cloak or a pattern you cannot buy anywhere. Props made of wood, card or plastic can also be painted and labelled directly. And for cosplay, they are a real insider tip.
At home, you can turn old favourites into something new. That is called upcycling: trainers with flowers, a denim jacket with lettering, cushion covers, shopping bags or personalised gifts.
Tip for professionals: Always paint a small test piece first, on a scrap of fabric or on a hidden spot such as the seam allowance.

Which set is right for me?

• Primary Set: 7 markers in bold primary colours. The classic for getting started.
• Jellied Brights Set: 7 markers in soft, cheerful candy colours.
• Monochrome Set (this set): 4 markers in black, white, silver and gold for contrast and shine.
• Mega Mix Set: 12 markers in bold, soft and neutral shades. A little bit of everything.
Would you rather dye a whole garment instead of painting on it? Then try Rit All-Purpose Dye for natural fibres and Rit DyeMore for polyester.

Rit FreeFlow Markers: Instructions

Painting with FreeFlow markers is easy. A little preparation is still worth it. Follow these steps and your design will turn out perfectly first time.

You will need

• Rit FreeFlow markers
• the item you want to paint
• cardboard or plastic sheeting as a base
• a pencil or tailor's chalk for the sketch
• a scrap of fabric for a test
• for shoes and hard surfaces: KIP masking tape

1. Painting fabric

1. Ideally, wash new garments once without fabric softener. This removes factory finishes that can stop the colour from sticking. Let the fabric dry completely and iron it smooth.
2. Put a piece of cardboard between the layers of fabric, for example inside the T-shirt. This stops the colour from soaking through to the back. Smooth the fabric out.
3. Lightly sketch your design with a pencil or tailor's chalk.
4. Do a test on a scrap of fabric or on a hidden spot, such as the seam allowance.
5. Remove the cap. Start by drawing the outlines with the fine bullet tip.
6. Fill in areas with the brush tip. Paint with light pressure and even strokes.
7. Before adding a second colour or a second layer, let the first one dry briefly. That way nothing smudges. For soft transitions, paint into the colour while it is still wet.
8. Close every marker tightly with its cap straight after use.
9. Let the finished item dry lying flat. Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash.

2. Painting shoes, leather and bags

1. Clean the surface. Dust, dirt and grease must be removed. Wipe smooth leather with a damp cloth and let it dry.
2. Mask off any areas that should stay clean with masking tape. On trainers, these are for example the rubber sole and the eyelets.
3. Stuff shoes with paper. This keeps the surface taut and makes painting easier.
4. Paint the outlines with the bullet tip and the areas with the brush tip.
5. Let everything dry well before removing the tape and wearing the shoes.

3. Painting paper, wood, glass, ceramics, metal and plastic

The surface should be clean, dry and free of grease. Wipe glass, ceramics, metal and plastic with a little soapy water first and dry them well. You don't need a primer.
The colour does not bleed through paper. Ideal for notebooks, cards and craft projects.
On mugs, plates and glasses, it is best to paint only areas that do not come into contact with food or the mouth, for example the outside below the rim.

Caring for painted textiles

• No heat setting needed. The colour is water-resistant once dry.
• Wash after 24 hours at the earliest
• Turn inside out before washing
• Choose a gentle cycle with a mild detergent
• Air-dry rather than tumble-dry
• Do not iron directly over the design. Iron on the reverse side or place a cloth in between.

Storage

Store the markers horizontally with the cap firmly closed. This keeps both tips evenly supplied with ink. Do not store the markers in direct sunlight or next to a radiator.

Good luck!

Rit FreeFlow Markers: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the markers and Rit fabric dye?

Rit fabric dye colours the fibre all the way through. The whole garment gets a new colour. FreeFlow markers, on the other hand, paint on top of the fabric, like a brush with paint. This lets you place lines, patterns, lettering and designs exactly where you want them.
By the way, the two go together perfectly: first dye the item with Rit All-Purpose Dye, then decorate it with the markers.

Can I paint on black or dark fabrics?

Yes. The ink covers like paint and stays vibrant even on dark and previously dyed fabrics. White, silver and gold look especially striking on black.

Do the markers also work on polyester?

Yes. Because the colour sits on top of the fabric rather than dyeing it, it also adheres to synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon. On very smooth or coated fabrics, please do a test first.

Why should I store the markers horizontally?

Lying flat, the ink spreads evenly inside the pen and both tips stay moist. If the pen stands upright for a long time, the ink collects at one end and the upper tip can dry out.

My marker is only painting faintly. What can I do?

Usually the cap was not fully closed or the pen was left standing upright for a long time. Lay it flat for a few hours. Then draw a few strokes on a piece of paper until the ink flows evenly again.

Can I mix the colours?

Yes, in two ways. Painted on top of each other when dry, the colours stay separate and do not smudge. Painted wet on wet with the brush tip, they create soft transitions.

Do I need to iron the colour in?

No. The colour is water-resistant once dry and does not need to be fixed. According to Rit, it stays colourfast on fabric for 20 washes and more.

When can I wash painted clothing?

After 24 hours at the earliest. Wash the item inside out on a gentle cycle and preferably let it air-dry.
