Always the right tool at hand
Leather sewing is usually done with sword shaped awls. These stitching awls are used for those beautiful narrow longish holes for pulling the needle and thread through the leather.
These preparation jobs do not work with a scratch awl, as it is very difficult to stitch through the leather with this type of awl. But a scratch awl is important for sewing up the thread. Widen the holes with the scratch awl! You can then stitch through already sewn holes without damaging the thread. The last two or three holes are widened and the thread can be sewn professionally.
Furthermore, the scratch awl is also a perfect marking tool. You can use it to transfer stencils to the leather. Often it does not make sense to draw on the leather with a pencil or a ballpoint pen. Pros use a scratch awl for that.
The lacing fid is the right tool for enlarging slot holes.
If you work with a braiding tool, you can enlarge the holes with the lacing fid.
The lacing fid is used e.g. if you want to braid a leather strap several times through a long hole.
