Potassium permanganate = skin tones and Off-White dyeing
Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) s the cheapest and best-known means of quickly ageing or dyeing textiles.
Potassium permanganate is the first choice for producing permanent "stage white". It can also be used to quickly dye hosiery to almost any skin tone.
Many costume designers also use potassium permanganate to break/soften bright colours.
The fashion industry uses potassium permanganate,to bleach and age jeans.
It is used as an oxidizing agent that slightly roughens or discolors cotton, for example, to create a vintage or washed-out effect.
How do I use potassium permanganate for costumes?
Wear gloves, safety goggles and possibly protective clothing, as potassium permanganate is highly staining.
1. Take a small amount of potassium permanganate (e.g. ½ teaspoon), dissolve it in 500 ml of hot water.
Only work with the dissolved form (otherwise there will be unsightly stains on the costume to be dyed). You can pour this liquid concentrate into a bottle and keep for later use.
2. Fill a tub with warm or cold water (enough to cover the garment) and add some liquid potassium permanganate to the water.
Important: If you dye in cold water, the dyeing takes longer and you can control the dyeing process very well. This is particularly important for beginners or users who rarely dye.
If you dye with potassium permanganate in hot water, the dyeing effect is immediate. You need to know in advance how strong the solution needs to be to achieve the right shade.
3. Continue dyeing until the textile has reached the desired intensity or the colour tone has been achieved.
TIP: If you dye colour samples in different colour levels in advance, you can use them during the dyeing process by wetting them and using them as samples.
-> The wet dyeing material should have the same color tone as the (wet) color sample selected in advance.
Too dark or discoloured?
Dissolve some citric acid or ascorbic acid in warm water (approx. 1-2 teaspoons of granules per 5 liters of water) and place the garment dyed with potassium permanganate in this liquid. Your garment will regain its original color in no time.
When re-colouring, please ensure that all acid residues have been completely washed out (otherwise the potassium permanganate will be neutralised immediately).
Environmental protection:
Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is generally not very harmful to the environment in small quantities, but it depends very much on the quantity, concentration, place of application and handling.
Use only a little powder. Potassium permanganate is a very strong colouring agent and only tiny amounts are needed. The staining liquor can be used again and again.
Small quantities are not a problem if you want to dispose of them in the waste water.
However, it is better not to dispose of the residues directly in the waste water - especially not undiluted.
If possible, neutralize residues with sodium thiosulphate or citric acid + ascorbic acid → this produces manganese(IV) oxide, which is non-toxic and settles as brown sludge.
The sludge can be disposed of in normal household waste (after it has dried well) - better than rinsing it out.
