If you live in a place with hard water, you definitely need the PATIN-A Water Softener for textile dyeings.
With hard water, dyeings can deviate greatly from the desired result. Colours will not be as bright and intense as with soft water (you will notice this especially with black).
PATIN-A Water Softener contains pure sodium hexametaphosphate and is the optimal water softener for textile dyes.
It is also easy on the wallet and on your machine when washing. With the PATIN-A Water Softener you need much less detergent and the heating elements cannot calcify.
Never use Calgon when dyeing, as Calgon contains the chemical "polycarboxylate", which prevents the transfer of dyes to the fabric and their adhesion.
Sodium Hexametaphosphate is also known among dyers under the name of "Metaphos".
Which amount of water softener do I need?
Dyeing in a pot:
For dyeing in a pot, take 5g per litre of water (corresponds to: 1 Teaspoon)
Dyeing in the washing machine / or washing machine load:
• Per washing machine load of a modern machine (with water saving function), calculate 70g water softener powder (corresponds to: 14 Teaspoons = 1/3 Cup)
• For older machines (bought before 2014 / or without water saving function), calculate 130g water softener powder (corresponds to: 26 Teaspoons = 1/2 cup + 1TS)
• If you do not know the machine, take 150g water softener (corresponds to: 26 Teaspoons = 1/2 cup + 1TS)
-> This information applies to European washing machines. US top-loaders require 1 Cup of powder.
For measuring, we recommend to use the US Measuring Spoon & Measuring Cup Set (TSP / Cup), that makes it easier to weigh out the quantities than with a gram scale.
