Fiebing's Low VOC Dye - the eco-conscious leather dye

Low VOC Leather Dye is available in 12 brilliant colours that can be used for shoes, boots, saddles and all your favourite leather craft projects.
Low VOC Leather Dye
is a formula with a low VOC content that works as easily and effectively as traditional penetrating leather dye products (Low VOC = low emission of volatile organic compounds).
As Low VOC Leather Dye releases fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, it is better for your health and complies with California VOC regulation 17CCR94507-94517 which limits VOCs in certain consumer products.

This product has been developed for the Californian market and is now available in Europe exclusively from PATIN-A.

Fiebings LOW VOC Leather Dye - Farbkarte - Nuancier

Benefits of this leather dye

Fiebing's Low VOC Dye is strongly pigmented and dyes very intensively all leather goods.
You will reach an excellent waterproof coverage, combined with a very high light fastness.
This dye penetrates the leather, it is not a 'covering colour'.
It is also excellent for dyeing large areas.

Apply, seal and stain

Low VOC Leather Dye can be applied with a sponge, a piece of fur or an airbrush. Wool daubers (wool brushes) are perfect for small surfaces or edges.
The leather dye should be fixed (finished) after dyeing.
You will find a large number of Finishes in our range.
Before finishing, allow the dyed leather to dry thoroughly for one to two days and rub off any excess pigments with a soft cloth.
A little lower (at the tab under the description) you will find a very useful compatibility chart showing which Fiebing's Finishes go with which Fiebing's Leather Dyes: Finish Compatibility Chart

Other uses and mixing of dyes

Fiebing's Low VOC Dye is very good for staining woods - the dyes are also very popular in model making. There are countless possible uses.
Fiebing's Low VOC Dyes can easily be mixed with each other to obtain secondary colours and intermediate shades. A pipette or an ordinary medical syringe is recommended for this purpose.

You will find useful tips about this product and about 'Leather Dyeing' in our blog post: Tips for Leather Dyeing

How much leather dye do I need?

unfortunately, we cannot answer this question 100%, as we do not know your shoes, boots, saddles, jackets, bags etc. and also do not know how dye-thirsty your leather is. Different leather qualities (possibly also old and new) absorb different amounts of liquid.

You can determine the amount of dye you need yourself:

Take exactly one litre of water and a fine-pored sponge.
Rub the desired item with it as intensively as if you were dyeing it.
After 'dyeing', check the amount of water used.
Pour the remaining water into a measuring cup and subtract the amount from one litre.
The difference is the amount of dye needed for one dyeing (650ml in the measuring cup = 350ml of dye needed ).
Since you have to dye two times you need twice the amount of dye.

This sounds complicated - but it is not!

You may save some dye or you can buy the exact amount for a perfect dye right away.

This  leather dye is used for undyed and untreated vegetable-tanned leather in leather crafts.

It may not be suitable for treated leather from factory-made bags, table tops, car seats, leather furniture, leather clothing etc. as these are usually pre-dyed and provided with a protective coating that prevents the dye from being absorbed.

We recommend therefore testing whether the dye is suitable for pre-treated or chrome-tanned leather:
• To do this, clean the leather you want to dye thoroughly with a leather cleaner and wet it with a drop of water (rub lightly if necessary ).
• If the leather absorbs the water, the dye may be suitable.
• Note however that we cannot guarantee the result if your leather is not vegetable-tanned leather.

We recommend that you contact the manufacturer for more information.

Always test the dye on an hidden part of the leather or on a small  piece of leather before treating the whole piece to be sure that the dye is suitable.

PATIN-A wishes good luck with your dyeing!
