Pure citric acid for textile dyeing and household use

For optimal results in textile dyeing, e.g. with acid dye or in household applications, PATIN-A citric acid (powder) is a must-have.
Citric acid helps to regulate the pH value, prevent limescale deposits and make colours appear more intense.
Especially with dark shades such as black or dark blue, it ensures that the colours remain bright and even.
PATIN-A citric acid (powder) consists of 100% pure citric acid powder and is the perfect choice for textile dyeing, household cleaning and water softening.
It is easy to use, environmentally friendly and gentle on both materials and machines.
You need significantly less detergent, the heating elements do not calcify and dyeing is reliably successful.

Why use citric acid for dyeing?

Citric acid is a very useful aid in textile dyeing – especially when working with reactive or acid dyes.
It fulfils several functions:
1. pH regulation
Many dyes, especially acid dyes for wool, silk or nylon, require a slightly acidic pH value for the dye to adhere properly to the fabric.
Citric acid lowers the pH value of the water to the optimum range (usually pH 4–5).
Without this acid, the colour may become pale or adhere unevenly.
2. Fixing colours
It helps the dyes to fix better in the fabric.
The difference is particularly noticeable with dark or intense colours such as black, dark blue or red: the colours become brighter and more even.
3. Water softening
Hard water contains calcium and magnesium ions, which can ‘block’ dyes.
Citric acid binds these ions and thus has a softening effect, similar to a water softener.
Advantage: The colour does not wash out nor become patchy.
4. Protection of the fabric
The acid slightly stabilises the fabric, preventing limescale deposits in machines or during dyeing.
This extends the life of the textiles and keeps the machine heating elements free of limescale.
💡 Practical tip: For pot dyeing, use approx. 5 g of citric acid per litre of water. For machine dyeing, use approx. 70 g–130 g per wash load, depending on the type of machine (see below).

Want to know more?

Citric acid opens the wool scales, lowers the pH value and thus helps the dye to penetrate deep into the fibre – at the same time, it fixes the dye.
Effect on wool scales
• Wool is a protein fibre fleece (keratin) and has an outer scale layer, similar to overlapping roof tiles.
• Many dyes (especially acid dyes) must penetrate between these scales in order to adhere evenly.
• Citric acid lowers the pH value of the dye bath to around 4-5.
• In this acidic environment, the tips of the scales dissolve easily, causing them to open up and allowing the dye molecules to penetrate the fibre more easily.
Result of the effect
• The colour becomes more even, more intense and more vibrant because the fibres can absorb more dye.
• At the same time, the pH value ensures that the colour is bound stably. This is the ‘fixing effect’ described above.
• Without citric acid, some of the dyes would only adhere to the surface and the colour could appear patchy or pale.

How much citric acid do I need?

Pot dyeing:
For dyeing in a pot, we recommend 5 g per litre of water (equivalent to 1 teaspoon).
Washing machine dyeing or wash load:
• Per modern washing machine load (with water-saving function): 70 g powder (equivalent to: 14 teaspoons = 1/3 cup)
• Older machines (before 2010 / without water-saving function): 130 g powder (equivalent to: 26 teaspoons = 1/2 cup + 1 TS)
• For unknown machines: approx. 130 g powder (equivalent to: 26 teaspoons = 1/2 cup + 1 TS)
→ US top-loading machines require slightly more: approx. 1 cup powder.
For precise dosing, we recommend the US measuring spoon & cup set (TSP / cup).
