Alaun for marbling pre-treatment
Alum (potassium aluminium sulphate) is used to pre-treat fabrics or paper before marbling to ensure that the designs are transferred clearly.
It is also used as a mordant for some natural dyes.
Instructions
For marbling fabrics:
Dissolve 10 grams of alum in 3.5 litres of warm water.
Soak the fabric in the solution until it is wet, wring out (do not rinse) and allow to air dry. Once dry, the fabric is ready for marbling and should be ironed before marbling.
For marbling papers:
Dissolve 10 grams of alum in 1 litre of water.
Spray or dab the solution with the sponge to lightly coat the paper.
Allow to dry completely before marbling.

Alaun Instructions
Alum mordanting is important for marbling paper, fabrics and shoes, as otherwise the colours will not transfer clearly and may run into each other.
Alum allows the marbled motif to adhere quickly and permanently to the fibre.
Alum-treated fabric or paper should be used within 2 days or placed in an airtight container or bag.
Pre-treat fabrics with Alum
For products containing fabrics, you will need 10 grams Alaun per 3,5 litres of warm water.
Water temperature: approx. 40ºC warm water
• The fabric should be pre-washed and must not contain any fabric softener.
• Once dry, the fabric is ready for marbling and should be ironed on the lowest setting before marbling (please make sure that the fabric does not burn).
• If you have hard water, you should use a water softener (one tablespoon = 15 grams per 1 litre of water).
Pre-treat paper with Alum
For products containing paper, you will need 10 grams Alam per 1 litre of warm water
• Fill a marbling tray with the alum solution and dip each sheet of paper in individually. Leave the sheets in the alum solution for 20-30 minutes and then dry them.
• Allow to dry completely before marbling.
• Wash the tray thoroughly if you want to use the same tray for marbling. Alum contaminates the carrageenan and prevents the colour from adhering to the paper.
Tips:
Experiment with different types of paper to find out which one works best for you. Papers that are absorbent and contain little to no sizing are well suited.
Rice paper and printing/plotter/drawing/charcoal/pastel paper seem to be particularly suitable. Some types of paper may not be suitable for marbling at all. The dye does not adhere properly and runs off the sides. Watercolour paper is not recommended.
