Tie Dye Batik: Dyeing Rainbow Spirals

Marta’s Tie-Dye tips:

Hi, anyone enjoying dyeing, my name is Marta and I’m showing you how easy it is to dye awesome rainbow spirals.

There are a lot of different tie-dye instructions.
I’ll show you how I do it. With my tips, anyone will get great results even if they tie-dye for the very first time.

This is what you need:

• a few DIN A-4- sheets
• a few strips of Sellotape
• warm water
• 1 large bowl
• 1 wire mesh (e.g. a cake cooling rack)
• 1 stir spoon
• 1 funnel

• 1 Tie-Dye-Batik-Kit

or:

• Deka aktuell textile dyes
• Deka reactive agent
• 500g of dye salt or cooking salt
• squeeze bottles (one per colour)
• 1 pair of rubber gloves (children’s sizes available at PATIN-A)
• many rubber bands (preferably in different sizes)
ziploc bags (reclosable plastic bags - one per dyed item)

white textiles preferably (T-shirts, scarves, bed linen, pillow cases…)

Before you start:

Tie-Dye Instruction Nr. 1

First of all, I roll the DIN A 4-sheets into cones, stick them together with adhesive tape and cut their tip off.

Tie-Dye Instruction Nr. 2
Now I have a funnel for each colour which I use to fill the dye powder into the squeeze bottle.
I need one sachet of dye per bottle (0.5 litre).
As soon as the dye powder is in the bottle, I add warm water (using the plastic funnel) and screw the bottle tightly.
Now shake the bottle well, so that the dye pigments dissolve completely.
If the squeeze bottle is new, cut the tip of the nozzle off with a pair of scissors.

Tie-Dye Instruction Nr. 3

I fill the bowl with three to four litres of warm water and stir approx. 500g of dye salt into the water.
I add one packet of DEKA reactive agent per litre of water.
Stir well, so that both powders dissolve completely!

Tie-Dye Instruction Nr. 4

Now I soak the washed and dried (!) textiles - for about 20 minutes - in the salt water (incl. reactive agent) and wring them out thoroughly.
Having done that with all my textiles, I pour the salt water away.
On the table, I turn each of the damp textiles with my fingers into a screw.
I fix each screw with a rubber band.
The tighter the rubber bands around the screws, the more white spots will be visible later.
As soon as all the shirts, scarves etc. are prepared, I start applying the dye.

Tie-Dye Instruction Nr. 5

I place the empty bowl with the wire rack on the table and lay the first screw on it.
Dye splashing on the side and bleeding out of the shirt will collect in the bowl - not on the table!
Now put your rubber gloves on (if not yet done)!
I spray the dyes on each of the fields created by the rubbers.
You should dye the front and back the same - I take the field colours from the front also for the back.
But you can also dye the front coloured and leave the back completely black.

I put each of the readily dyed items in a separate, tightly closed plastic bag (that is why I use ziploc bags).
Now I leave the lot to rest for 24 hours.

Rinsing the following day...

Tie-Dye Instruction Nr. 6

The following day, I take the items out of the bags, remove the rubbers and rinse the textiles thoroughly under running water until no more colour is coming out of the fibers.
Finally, I wash each textile with a mild detergent and rinse it once again in clear water.

With this dye method, we do not need a fixative. The colours are boil fast and light fast and thus also suitable for bed linen or towels.

Make sure to dry your dyed items carefully - hanging them on the washing line is best or put them in the dryer on gentle cycle.
